Latvia’s mobile phone operator Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) has become the Baltic distributor of a military smartphone that was developed by the South Korean technology company Samsung, LMT told LETA.

This week LMT, Samsung and representatives of the Latvian ministries of defence, interior and justice, presented the Tactical Baseline Device, which is a smartphone adapted to military and security needs. It features increased durability, a high level of cybersecurity, and specialised software and programmes.

The company notes that this tactical phone is already being used in other NATO member states, and LMT will be the first distributor of the technology in the Baltic countries.

Ingmars Pukis is LMT’s vice president and board member, and he says that the tactical device which was developed by LMT and Samsung can be adapted for various missions that involve harsh environments. It also supports software such as Vidsargs, TAK, etc., thus ensuring interoperability between military technologies whilst also strengthening the region’s defence.

LMT adds that the Tactical Baseline Device is a safe, reliable and effective communications tool for a wide range of operational environments. The smart device is highly resistant to water, dust, extreme temperatures, drops, shocks and vibration, etc. It also provides simple and robust integration with tactical radio systems, global positioning systems, drones, sensors and other devices.
