Estonia’s parliament elected Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as the country’s next president on Wednesday, with 71 members of the Riigikogu voting in her favor. A candidate needed at least 68 votes to secure the presidency.
A total of 78 members of the 101-seat parliament participated in the secret ballot, with seven ballots left unmarked and none declared invalid. Following the vote, Madise thanked lawmakers for their trust and said she would work to promote cooperation and mutual understanding while helping make Estonia a safe and good place to live.
Madise will become Estonia’s seventh president and the second woman to serve as the country’s head of state. She is scheduled to be sworn into office on October 12.
