Tallinna Sadam looking for partners to develop vacant areas at Muuga

Listed Estonian port company Tallinna Sadam has launched a search for cooperation partners for the development of vacant areas located in the eastern part of Muuga Harbor, the large freight harbor just outside Tallinn.

More than 7.6 hectares of land is on offer.

Tallinna Sadam said in a press release on Wednesday it is interested in the development of a multifunctional loading, handling and storage complex for environmentally friendly fuels and/or other production and logistics complex in said territory.

Margus Vihman, chief commercial officer of Tallinna Sadam, said their main focus is on environmentally friendly fuels.

“More and more companies have set their sights on reducing the environmental footprint of their activities, which largely requires switching to greener energy. There is no doubt that replacing fossil fuels with environmentally friendly alternatives concerns not only shipping, but the entire transport sector. Therefore, we are primarily interested in finding a partner who would build a loading, handling and storage complex for environmentally friendly fuels in Muuga Harbor. At the same time, we do not exclude that a different kind of production or logistics facility will be established in the area in question,” he said.

The area to be developed is located in the eastern part of Muuga Harbor, outside the free zone of the harbor. According to the need and possible logistics, it is possible to use Muuga Harbor berth No. 33, which is 198 meters long and has a depth of 10.8 meters. The surface area of the existing site is 76,274 square meters, which can be expended by a maximum of 67,978 square meters through claiming land from the sea.

The valid detailed spatial plan establishes building rights for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the plot in question. If, for some reason, it is not possible or not necessary to build an LNG terminal, the plot can be used as port land — as production land for warehouses, production facilities, etc.

The port company expects the potential interested party to submit their development idea by May 31, 2024 at the latest, describing their vision of the use of the areas, cargo volumes, the size of the investment, the schedule, and the owners or investors of the project.
