Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas remains the public’s top choice to lead the Cabinet of Ministers, but the percentage of Lithuanians disapproving of the government’s performance has increased during the past month. This was reported in the latest Spinter Tyrimai opinion poll, which was published by the Delfi news portal on Wednesday.
People were asked about Remigijus Zemaitaitis, who is the leader of the Nemunas Dawn party, which is part of the governing coalition. He is less popular than he was in past polls.
When asked about the government’s performance, 56.1% of respondents said in April that their views are negative or rather negative, and that was a slight increase from 54.5% in March.
31.8% of respondents said that they have positive or rather positive views about the government, which was up a bit from 30.5% a month before.
The percentage of respondents who had no opinion or who declined to answer the question edged down to 12.1% last moth, as against 15% in March.
When asked which politician or public figure might be the best prime minister, 15.4% cited Paluckas, which was up from 14.5% in March.
A former conservative prime minister, Ingrida Simonyte, was second on the list with 9.6% (down from 10.8%), followed by the Democrats for Lithuania party leader Saulius Skvernelis, who is also a former prime minister – 8% as against 6.3%. Liberal Movement leader Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen was in fourth place at 5% (4.1%).
Laurynas Kasciunas, the leader of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrat alliance, was in 5th place with 3.9% (up from 3.5%), followed by Greens and Farmers leader Aurelijus Veryga (3.7%, 3.3). The Nemunas Dawn leader, Zemaitaitis, was in seventh place (3.1%, 5.3%).
Other politicians plumped for by respondents included European Parliament member Virginijus Sinkevicius from Democrats for Lithuania, Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijosaitis, who is an independent, as well as Social Democrat Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis.
Spinter Tyrimai polled 1,019 people online and by phone between April 18 and 29. The poll had a margin of error of 3.1%.
