Electricity prices soaring in Lithuania

The average wholesale electricity price in Lithuania surged by 55% to EUR 195/MWh last week amid a spell of cold and windless weather. This was reported on Monday by Litgrid, which is the country’s power transmission operator.

“Electricity prices rose in Lithuania and the other Baltic states,” Litgrid’s market development director Aiste Krasauskiene noted in a news release. “We can look out the window and see the main reason for this. After a very warm January, harsh winter set in across the region in mid-February.”

The weather conditions resulted in minimal wind power generation at a time of maximum consumption of electricity. Combined heat and power plants, electricity imports and unusually high output from solar power plants helped to compensate for the strong demand, Krasauskiene said.

Electricity consumption grew by 7% from February 10 and 16 to 275 GWh, with local power plants covering 53% of demand. Electricity generation dropped by 13% week-on-week to 147 GWh.

Electricity exports from Lithuania dropped to less than 0.1 GWh last week, as against 24 GWh one week earlier, Litgrid added.
