Tallinn Mayor Jevgeni Ossinovski met yesterday with Halyna Shymanska, Acting Mayor of Zhytomyr, and Valentyn Arendarchuk, Head of the city’s Department of Education. The meeting took place as part of an educational visit from Zhytomyr, during which cooperation between the cities in the field of education was discussed.
“The future of Ukraine depends on whether young people can continue their education even during times of crisis,” said Mayor Jevgeni Ossinovski. He emphasized that support must be based on long-term and diverse cooperation. “Tallinn has already provided Ukraine with equipment and other material assistance and will continue to do so. Equally important as material aid is sharing ideas, experiences, and expertise. Study visits like this provide the kind of substantive support that is essential for Ukraine’s reconstruction.”
Tallinn Teachers’ House is leading the EDUHUB education innovation project launched this summer, which will establish a unique methodology center in the Zhytomyr region. The project will help improve the quality of early childhood education, support teachers’ professional development, and foster children’s creative and scientific thinking as well as first aid skills.
The already launched kood/Zhytomyr project is bringing to Ukraine the well-known Estonian IT education model, supporting adult retraining and the development of digital skills. The project is led by the coding school //kood, in partnership with Zhytomyr Polytechnic University. Tallinn contributed computers to the project, which were delivered to the university in June.
Tallinn also aims to expand cooperation with other Ukrainian cities and is particularly interested in learning about civil protection practices. Multilateral cooperation is being planned in the areas of civil protection, sustainable urban space management, and EU integration.
Tallinn has supported Ukraine since 2022. This year, the city launched a dedicated Ukraine program that combines humanitarian aid and development cooperation with Ukrainian cities to support post-war recovery and integration with the European Union.
