Nearly ½ of Latvians expect no change in their standard of living over next five years: Eurobarometer

The winter 2025 Eurobarometer survey shows that nearly one-half of respondents in Latvia expect no change in their personal standard of living over the next five years.

31% responded that they believe their standard of living would improve, while 19% anticipated that their lives would worsen.

The data sets from the survey relate to the European Union’s role in tacking global problems, the primary priorities and values of local residents, perceptions about the European Parliament, the EU and EU membership, and information about the EU and the EP.

73% of Latvian respondents argued that the EU’s role in protecting Europeans from global crises and security risks should become much more important in future, with 17% saying that the role should not change and 11% plumping for the idea that the EU’s role should decline.

Asked about the EU’s role in protecting European citizens against global crises and security risks in the past, 36% of respondents in Latvia said that it has become much more important, 43% that it has remained unchanged, and 11% that it has become less important.

The next question was about the areas upon which the EU should focus in future to strengthen its position in the world. Latvians most often mentioned defence and security, competitiveness and the economy, as well as education and science as their top three priorities.

89% of Latvians agree that EU member states should be more united in the face of global challenges, while only 8% disagree with that statement.

69% of respondents in Latvia believed that the EU needs more resources to deal while global challenges, while 24% disagreed.

48% of respondents believe that the EU’s global role will remain unchanged in coming years, 19% expect it to decrease, and 28% believe that it will increase.

The survey was conducted between January 9 and 29 among 1,005 Latvian citizens aged 15 and over.  26,354 Europeans took part in the EU-wide poll.
