The number of newborn babies registered in Latvia in October of this year was below 1,000 for the first time, according to preliminary data from the Central Statistical Bureau.
994 newborns were registered in October, which was 15.8% or 186 fewer than during the same month of 2023. 498 boys and 505 girls were registered.
Eurostat reports that there have been seven months during which Latvia has the fewest births – 1,061 in April 2024, 1,063 in February 2023, 1,075 in March 2024, 1,077 in November 2022, 1,079 in November 2023, and 1,094 in May 2024.
The largest number of newborns registered in Latvia during one month was in June 1922, when 4,202 births were recorded. This was followed by 4,091 births in February 1987, 4,068 in March 1923, 4,065 in January 1924, and 3,968 in March 1927.
A total of 10,710 births were registered in Latvia during the first 10 months of 2024, which was 13% (1,605) fewer than during the same period last year. Among the registered newborns were 5,481 boys (12.8% or 806 fewer than at the same time last year), while 5,229 were girls (-13.3%, 799).
The data also show that 21,871 deaths were registered in Latvian during the first ten months of this year – 4.5% or 1,040 fewer than during the first ten months of 2023, when 22,911 deaths were recorded.
The number of deaths registered exceeded the number of births by 11,161 this year and by 10,596 during the same period in 2023.
9,151 marriages were recorded during the first ten months of 2024, which was 4.1% or 396 fewer than during the corresponding period last year.
On November 1 this year, Latvia’s estimated population was 1.855 million.
