Latvia may boost solar power share in electricity to 10% this year

The share of electricity produced in Latvia by solar power plants (SPP) might reach 10% of total production, which would be 3.3% more than last year, LETA learned at the Solar Energy for Latvia association.

The group says that during the first quarter of 2025, the amount of energy produced by Latvia’s SPPs has almost quadrupled in comparison to last year’s figures. Solar power generation capacity is expected to nearly double this year, thus adding significantly to Latvia’s green energy portfolio.

The launch of new power plants and the links between the first large-scale solar parks to the Augstsprieguma Tikls transmission operator have ensured that at least 10% of electricity generated in Latvia this year will come from the parks, the association adds.

Last year Latvia’s installed solar power generation capacity grew rapidly to 661 megawatts (MW). The amount of energy produced at these plants tripled to 400 gigawatt hours (GWh). Last year, solar power accounted for 6.7% of all electricity that was generated in Latvia. This year it is to be commissioning new solar parks with a total capacity of at least 600 MW. This will allow the region to exceed the one-gigawatt capacity threshold and significantly reduce the electricity deficit in the region.

Solar Energy for Latvia board member Janis Bethers notes that Q2 is the main “harvest time” for solar parks, when Latvia produces around 50% of its annual generation output. Sunnier weather, longer daylight hours and relatively low air temperatures which cool the solar panels – all of these come together to ensure the highest production efficiency.

Bethers adds that solar production has now quadrupled and is expected to increase further. One major development was the construction of the first large solar park that is linked to Augstsprieguma Tikls. Just a few such parks, says the expert, can significantly contribute toward Latvia’s energy independence.

“This is important for every user, as we are already seeing that solar energy is the fastest renewable energy solution to be put into operation,” Bethers says. “It almost immediately reduced electricity prices in the region.”
