The Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates (LCSA) and the AI-powered legal research platform Lexu AI have signed a cooperation agreement to promote the safe and professional use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the work of lawyers in Latvia.
The partnership will not only provide lawyers with broader opportunities to integrate Lexu AI into their daily legal practice but will also include regular training, professional development, and the joint improvement of the platform based on feedback and experience from practising lawyers.
“The legal profession is currently undergoing one of the most significant transformations in decades. Artificial intelligence is already capable of dramatically accelerating legal research and document analysis, but it must be implemented responsibly while maintaining the highest standards of professional quality and confidentiality. Our goal is to develop solutions that help lawyers work more efficiently while ensuring that human professional judgment remains the primary basis for decision-making,” said Mārtiņš Odobērs, CEO and Co-founder of Lexu AI.
“Artificial intelligence is becoming an important working tool for the legal profession. The responsibility of the Latvian legal profession is to ensure that these technologies are used professionally, securely, and in full compliance with a lawyer’s duties towards clients. Technology can improve efficiency, but it can never replace a lawyer’s legal assessment, professional experience, or responsibility for the decisions they make,” said Saulvedis Vārpiņš, Chairman of the Council of the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.
The agreement aims to encourage the safe and professional adoption of AI technologies throughout the Latvian legal profession. It provides opportunities for continuing professional education and practical training on the use of AI in legal practice, document analysis, and cybersecurity, while also strengthening cooperation in the further development of the Lexu AI platform so that it continues to meet the evolving needs of legal professionals.
Lexu AI is Latvia’s first artificial intelligence-powered legal research platform. The company has previously signed a cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Law at University of Latvia Faculty of Law. As part of that partnership, the use of artificial intelligence in legal research has been incorporated into the faculty’s study programme, while Mārtiņš Odobērs regularly delivers lectures to students on the opportunities and risks of AI tools in legal practice.
Earlier this year, the company introduced one of the most significant advancements in Latvia’s legal technology sector by making all judgments of the European Court of Human Rights available within the platform. The judgments have been fully translated into Latvian and can be searched and analysed using advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
