The number of childbirths in Latvia in January of this year was 881, which was 16.1% or 169 babies fewer than in January 2024. This was reported by the Central Statistical Bureau on the basis of preliminary data.
This was the fourth month in a row that the number of newborns was below one thousand – 994 in October last year, 940 in November and 921 in December.
The number of newborn boys in January 2025 was 462, which was 14.3% down as against last year’s first month. There were 419 newborn girls, which was a drop of 18%.
2,408 deaths were registered in Latvia in January, which was 10.9% or 294 demises fewer than during the first month of 2024.
The number of registered deaths thus exceeded the number of births by 1,527, as against 1,652 during the same period last year.
466 marriages were registered in Latvia in January, which was 55.3% or 166 more than during the same month in 2024.
Latvia’s estimated population on January 1 this year was 1.85 million.
