As Lithuania completes the final four-lane section of the Via Baltica motorway to the Polish border, Transport Minister Juras Taminskas says the stretch from Kaunas to the Latvian border will be finished by 2033.
“Via Baltica up to the Latvian border will be completed by 2033, as planned,” Taminskas told reporters in the Kalvarija District during the opening of the section linking Lithuania and Poland.
He said construction could begin in 2030 once design work is completed and land acquisition finalized.
Asked about the project’s estimated cost, the minister said the figure would become clear later.
According to Taminskas, the project will be financed from both the state budget and the European Union’s 2028–2034 budget framework.
On Monday, the Lithuanian and Polish presidents inaugurated the final 12-kilometer upgraded section of the international Via Baltica motorway on the Kaunas-Marijampolė-Suwałki route.
The section was upgraded by the infrastructure construction company Kauno Tiltai under a €154.7 million contract, excluding VAT.
Via Baltica is a trans-European motorway running from Warsaw to Tallinn, with a total length of 970 kilometers, 269 of which are in Lithuania.
According to the state road operator Via Lietuva, the road is important not only for civilian traffic but also for military mobility.
