Two Spaniards arrested for planning terrorist attack in Lithuania

Lithuanian law enforcement officials have detained two Spanish nationals and charged them with planning to carry out an act of terrorism in the country, prosecutors announced on Tuesday.

The Prosecutor-General’s Office says that the suspects arrived in Lithuania in September with the alleged aim of setting fire to production facilities, outdoor equipment and other items used by a private company in Siauliai. The attack was to be conducted at night.

“The suspects failed to carry out their criminal plan and to hide from law enforcement,” the office declared in a news release.

The pre-trial investigation is being supervised by the Prosecutor-General’s Office and is being conducted by the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau. Prosecutors and police officers are working closely with the State Security Department, the Second Investigation Department, as well as foreign counterparts so as to gather evidence and ensure state and public safety, the news release said.

The two suspects were attempting to hide in Riga, Latvia, where they were detained by Latvia’s State Security Service.

“Shortly thereafter, the suspects were handed over to Lithuania on the basis of a European arrest warrant that was issued by Lithuania,” the Prosecutor-General’s Office said. “The suspects are currently in custody, and the pre-trail investigation is ongoing.”
