Total number of Lithuania’s eligible voters down 4 pct to over 2.38 mln

A total of 2,385,234 voters are eligible to vote in Lithuania’s May 12 presidential election and citizenship referendum, a four percent decrease from five years ago, according to the final voter list approved by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) on Monday.

This year’s eligible voter count is down by almost 100,000 compared to the 2019 presidential election and referendum.

The list includes 2,327,624 voters in Lithuania and 57,610 registered in diplomatic missions abroad.

“This number could still go up if people come to the embassies on election day,” Darius Gaizauskas of the CEC said.

A total of 2,486,915 citizens were eligible to vote in the presidential election and the same referendum on citizenship five years ago, and 2,457,722 in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

The voter count is particularly important in the May 12 referendum, because removing the existing ban on dual citizenship from the Constitution requires a “yes” vote from more than 50 percent of all eligible voters.

In the 2019 referendum, 956,564, or 38 percent of voters, supported dual citizenship.

Early voting for Sunday’s presidential election and referendum is starting on Tuesday.
