Tartu makes it to National Geographic’s list of exciting destinations

The southern Estonian university town of Tartu is the only city in the entire Baltic region to be listed among the 30 most exciting destinations to visit in 2024 by the National Geographic Traveler magazine.

“Estonians have long considered Tartu — 110 miles from capital Tallinn — to be their country’s cultural and intellectual heart, due to its top-notch museums, lively cafes and the country’s oldest university. Little wonder, then, that this UNESCO City of Literature has been selected as one of three European Capitals of Culture for 2024, alongside Bad Ischl in Austria and Bodo in Norway,” it is said in the article listing the 30 destinations.

“Tartu and the wider southern Estonia region are marking the occasion with a year of events, from classical concerts and film screenings to edgy outdoor art installations,” the description adds.

The magazine also mentions some events of the city’s Capital of Culture program, such as “Kissing Tartu”, the Stencibility street art festival and the Curated Diversity scheme.
