Lithuania recorded its lowest emigration figures last year since the restoration of its independence in 1990, the country’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday. It was citing preliminary data from the State Data Agency.
9,486 citizens of Lithuania left the country in 2024, while 18,934 returned.
Most returnees came from the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands.
The Foreign Ministry noted that more citizens have been coming back than departing over the last five years.
Last year’s annual survey of the Lithuanian diaspora found that 22% had firm plans to return, while another 57% said that they could not rule out doing so.
The main reason for returning home to Lithuania, say respondents, is that they have family and friends there. Many said that they feel most at home in Lithuania, appreciate the high quality of life that is available there, want to work and contribute toward Lithuania’s future, and see positive changes occurring in the country.
