Klaipeda continues to lead Baltic ports in cargo volumes

The Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda has retained its lead among Baltic ports when it comes to handled cargo volumes during the period between January and October this year. This according to new figures that were released by the Lithuanian seaport’s authority on Thursday.

“The port of Klaipeda alone handled about 2 million tonnes more of cargo than all three Latvian ports combined,” the agency said in a news release.

Cargo volumes in Riga, Latvia, dropped by 7% to 14.6 million tonnes, Ventspils experienced a 29% decline to 6.5 million tonnes, while the port at Liepaja experienced a slight increase of 0.4% in cargo volumes to 5.9 million tonnes.

Klaipeda for its part recorded a 7% increase to 29 million tonnes.

Orlen Lithuania’s oil termina at Butinge handled 7.66 million tonnes of crude oil between January and October, which was a 2% rise year on year.

Baltic seaports taken together handled 63.8 million tonnes of cargo during the first ten months of this year, which was down 2% as against 65.3 million tonnes during the same period last year.
