Baltic energmins agree on offshore wind farm development

The energy ministers from the eight Baltic Sea region countries have agreed to phase out fossil fuels, further develop offshore wind energy and make critical energy infrastructure more resilient to cyber and physical threats.

The declaration on offshore wind development in the Baltic Sea was signed in Vilnius on Wednesday by the energy ministers and delegated officials from Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Latvia, Lithuania’s Energy Ministry said.

Representatives of the aforementioned countries, as well as those from Belgium, NATO and the European Commission, who attended the to Baltic Sea High Level Energy Security Meeting in Vilnius on Wednesday, discussed ways to make use of the Baltic Sea’s 90-gigawatt wind energy potential, the statement reads.

Lithuanian Energy Minister Dainius Kreivys says infrastructure and balancing measures are needed when expanding energy in the Baltic Sea for the free movement of such energy across Europe, and Europe should agree on the joint long-term development of electricity, gas and hydrogen infrastructure.

The minister also pointed out to his counterparts that their countries should completely stop imports of energy resources from Russia in order to make use of the Baltic Sea’s wind energy potential.
