Another cable damaged in Baltic Sea

A submarine optical cable owned by the Latvian State Radio and Television Centre (LVRTC) in the Baltic Sea was damaged early on Sunday morning, the agency told the LETA news agency.

The LVRTC explained that its data transmission monitoring system detected a disruption of data transmission services in the area around Ventspils and Gotland. The centre switched to other transmission routes to continue to provide access. There were possible delays in data transmission speeds, but for the most part this was not a problem for end users in Latvia, the LVRTC claimed.

The LVRTC has partnered with technology service providers to carry out a performance test of the system, as well as to take network measurements from equipment that is housed in Ventspils.

“Right now there’s no reason to believe that the cable was damaged seriously or that the damage was caused by external influences,” says Vineta Sprugaine, director of corporate communications at the LVRTC.

The agency has alerted the relevant authorities in the hope that a criminal investigation will be conducted.

The cable is at a depth of more than 50 metres, which means that the nature of the damage will be clear only once repair work as started, Sprugaine added.

The LVRTC also says that the electronic communications operators who have relied on the submarine fibre optic cable have been able to find other transmission routes for their needs.

The centre is negotiating with a company that can ensure technical repair of the cable, saying that it is a foreign enterprise with extensive experience in technologically complex tasks such as this time. Repair work will start as soon as agreement is reached on putting the repair vessel to sea, Sprugaine explains.

As has been reported in the past, critical submarine infrastructure in the Baltic Sea has occurred several times in recent months, and the allegation is that this was down to Russian sabotage.

In early January, NATO announced that it was launching a new mission to protect underwater cables in the Baltic Sea.
