When it comes to developing the energy sector, it is important to think in a longer perspective than an election cycle, University of Latvia rector Gundars Berzins said at the opening of the Baltic energy security, accessibility, and sustainability conference “Navigating Energy Pathways for the Baltic Sea Region”.
He said that the energy sector is facing various challenges related to the rapid development of new technologies, for which society and industry are not always prepared. Electricity grids are not always ready to cope with increasing loads and to ensure a balance between supply and demand. Similarly, if energy producers are ready to produce, but the public is not always ready to accept these projects, it is necessary to consider how to ensure a balance.
Berzins indicated that, on the one hand, it is important for the renewable energy industry to engage with the public. On the other hand, there is an industry that needs more and more energy. In the middle of all this is the role of universities.
The University of Latvia rector stressed the importance of thinking beyond electoral cycles in the development of the energy sector. “I think this is extremely important, not only because technology requires long-term investment, but also because the public needs to understand the importance of different approaches to energy,” said Berzins.
