Estonia is approaching its September presidential election, with several names already being discussed as possible successors to current President Alar Karis.

The president is elected by the 101-member Riigikogu rather than directly by voters, and a candidate needs at least 68 votes to win. As the governing coalition does not command enough seats to elect a president on its own, support from opposition parties will be necessary.

According to Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR), the people currently being discussed cannot yet formally be considered candidates, as official nominations will take place from August 21 to 24 and each nominee must first agree to stand.
