The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair will not operate flights from Riga to Cologne and Memmingen in Germany during the upcoming winter season, representatives of Riga Airport told LETA.

According to the airport, the submitted winter schedule shows that, as in previous years, Ryanair will discontinue flights to Cologne, which for several seasons have only been offered from Riga during the summer.

In addition, the airline has no plans to operate flights to Memmingen this winter. Memmingen Airport, located 60 kilometers from Munich, is a hub for low-cost carriers, the airport noted.

During the coming winter season, the Latvian national airline airBaltic and Germany’s Lufthansa will continue to serve German destinations from Riga Airport, offering passengers five routes. airBaltic will operate flights to Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich, while Lufthansa will fly to Frankfurt.

At the same time, no significant changes are expected in the overall seat capacity available on flights between Riga and Germany compared to the previous winter season, the airport added.

The winter aviation season begins on October 31.

As previously reported by LETA, Ryanair ceased flights between Riga and Berlin this spring after announcing a 20 percent reduction in services at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, citing high airport fees. Flights from Berlin to Riga and five other destinations have since been discontinued.
