AS Tallinna Linnatransport (TLT) will build a parallel tram track branch at the airport to allow more frequent tram services and improve operations at the terminal stop. Construction will start on 18 August and finish in December.
The 110-metre-long additional branch will be built next to the existing tram terminal stop and the bus stops and parking area.
Deputy Mayor for Transport Kristjan Järvan stressed that the new branch is being built at a strategically suitable time, when trams are not running to the airport due to Rail Baltic terminal construction. “TLT is taking advantage of the temporary suspension of tram service to the airport to build infrastructure that will enable more frequent tram departures and smoother operations at the airport terminal stop. The new branch will make it possible to better organise tram traffic in the future and offer tram drivers more convenient breaks. When trams start running to the airport again next year, line No. 2, which connects the railway station and the port, will be routed there,” Järvan said.
To ensure safety, one existing safety island will be extended and the shape of another will be modified so that the high kerb does not interfere with moving trams. Pedestrian crossings with tactile paving will be installed at the ends of the islands to improve accessibility for visually impaired people. An additional pedestrian crossing will be built on the southern access road, along with a new footpath leading to the car park.
The additional airport tram track was designed by Road-Expert OÜ and construction will be carried out by KMG Infra OÜ. The contractual cost of the work is €851,000 plus VAT.
