Amounts of allowance for families with many children to be smaller in Estonia from 2024

The Social Insurance Board on Thursday reminded recipients of the allowance for families with many children that the amounts of the allowance will decrease as of January.

From the new year, the allowance for families with three to six children will be 450 euros a month instead of the current 650 euros, and 650 euros a month instead of 850 euros for families with seven or more children. The gradual phase-out of the large family allowance will also be abolished.

In 2023, the allowance for families with many children was paid in full to families with three children until the eldest child turned 19, after which the allowance began to decrease in stages. As of January 2024, this will no longer be the case. In other words, the allowance for families with many children will no longer be paid at the rate of 2/3 or 1/3 of the normal amount if one or two children under the age of 19 are left in the family.

The amounts will be recalculated automatically and the beneficiary does not have to do anything, officials said.

These changes do not affect the single parent’s child allowance, nor the allowances for the first and second child, which will remain at 80 euros per child. The same applies to the child allowance from the third child onwards, which is 100 euros per month.

In total, the Social Insurance Board pays child allowances to more than 163,000 families, the single parent’s child allowance to 8,600 and the allowance for families with many children to 23,900 families.
