Tallinn is the most popular destination for Latvian passengers from Riga for the international passenger carrier Lux Express,
Aldis Kibens, Head of Baltic Business Development at Lux Express, told LETA in an interview.
“Tallinn is clearly the dominant city, but Vilnius is also very close. It is also very clear that we do not really perceive the other Baltic countries as foreign countries and a weekend in Vilnius or Tallinn is as common as a weekend in Liepaja or Cesis,” added Kibens.
He also added that the number of passengers to Tartu has increased significantly this year, explaining that Tartu will be the European Capital of Culture next year and that National Geographic magazine has listed Tartu among the top 30 destinations to visit in the coming year.
Commenting on the route from Riga to Saaremaa in Estonia, which was launched this summer, he said that the route would probably be there next summer as well.
As for new holiday destinations, he pointed out that Lux Express is assessing the flow of people who are willing to travel not only during one season, but would be constant.
“We are different in that we are a fully commercial company, we do not receive any subsidies and therefore we have to be sure that the routes will be profitable. If there are not enough people willing to travel on a route, then our costs will be higher than our income and it will not pay off,” added Kibens.
