A solution to the war in Gaza is “within reach” thanks to US efforts, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Monday.

At a meeting with his Polish, French and Ukrainian counterparts in Warsaw, Wadephul called on Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas to agree to US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.

“A solution is within reach,” he said. “We call on all parties involved to now have the courage to take the final decisive step.”

“This war must now finally come to an end, and Hamas must finally let the hostages return to their families,” added Wadephul.

The German government has been working hard in recent months to reach this stage, he argued. “Now is the time to open the door to long-term peace.”

Berlin is convinced that only a negotiated two-state solution will bring peace, and that Hamas can no longer play any role in governing Gaza.

Trump is set to present Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a plan to end the bloody conflict later on Monday at the White House.

Consultations on the plan are “in the final stages,” Trump told the Axios news website.
