Latvian security and defense industry companies have established a new competence center called DefInno, and it has been added to the Register of Enterprises.
The founders of the center are the Federation of Security and Defence Industries of Latvia (FSDI Latvia) as well as companies Armgate, Belss, Energolukss, Dati Group, Pelegrin, Teters and Vizulo, the federation informed LETA.
As an innovation cluster, DefInno aims to increase the competitiveness of the companies working in the security and defense sectors, as well as cooperation between companies and educational and research institutions in the development of new products, services and technologies in line with the priorities for internal and external security set at the national, European Union (EU) and NATO level. Private and public funding will be raised for these purposes.
Elina Egle, Member of the Board at DefInno and Chairperson of the Board of DAIF Latvia, pointed out that the initially identified R&D directions are intended for investments in the development of new digital technologies and products in the field of defense and security in cooperation with DAIF Latvia members in Latvia and abroad.
Given the potential for growth, work will be carried out in areas such as cyber security, artificial intelligence (AI), digital tools, virtual technologies and autonomous systems. Products and technologies will be jointly developed for the digitalization of production in the defense and security industries, including infrastructure and energy efficiency development, sustainable mobility and transport solutions.
DefInno’s main task will be to become a platform where new research and innovation projects emerge through the exchange of information during work on projects. This will involve cooperation with similar organizations in Latvia and abroad, EU institutions and NATO agencies, centers of excellence and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to foster new opportunities for the development of cross-sectoral and international projects.
Opportunities for cooperation will be sought through targeted events, networking activities and by bringing in representatives from other sectoral organizations to assess the proposed cross-sectoral or international projects.
DAIF Latvia brings together 125 companies, educational and research institutions, as well as associate members, i.e. major foreign military manufacturers.
According to Firmas.lv, DefInno’s board member is Egle, and the company’s share capital is EUR 2,800. The members of the Supervisory Board are Ingemars Butkevics, Mikelis Caunitis, Aldis Gulbis, Neils Sniedzins, Georgs Vardanjans, Janis Zeltins and Kaspars Ziedins.
