On the night of September 9-10, a group of Shahed-type drones entered Polish airspace after being launched in attacks against Ukraine. Poland’s air force, supported by NATO aircraft – including Dutch F-35s and fighter jets from Germany and Italy – intercepted several of them. In total, around nineteen objects were identified, with part of them successfully neutralized.

The Prime Minister described the incident as “a large-scale provocation” and triggered Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, activating consultations among allies. Operational Command stressed that there had been a real threat to public safety, which led to heightened readiness and the temporary closure of several airports, including Warsaw’s Chopin Airport.

Although no casualties were reported, eastern regions of Poland – such as Podlaskie, Lublin, and Mazovia – were placed under alert. Crisis management teams convened across the country, while NATO reiterated its commitment to defend allied territory.
