Rīga port sees 6.8% drop in cargo turnover

The Freeport of Rīga handled 13.141 million tonnes of cargo during the first nine months of 2024, which was 6.8% less than during the same period in 2023, the port has said.

Bulk cargo dominated the cargo structure from January to September, but volumes dropped by 16.3% year-on-year to 6.444 million tonnes.

Turnover of general cargo, by contrast, grew by 5.9% to 6.034 million tonnes, while handling of liquid cargoes dropped 6% to 662,400 tonnes.

Reloading of container cargo increased 1.1% on the year to 3.676 million tonnes from January to September this year.  This represented 28% of the port’s total cargo turnover (as against 25.8% a year ago).

Reloading of grain and grain products increased 16% from the same period a year ago to 2.508 million tonnes, or 19.1% of all cargoes.  Handling of timber products was up 21.2% to 2.236 million tonnes.

Coal cargoes dropped the most, from 1.36 million tonnes a year ago to just 82,200 during the first nine months of this year, the freeport said.

All told in 2023, the Rīga port handled 18.794 million tonnes of cargo, which was by 20.1% less than during the previous year.
