The UK’s Post Office Travel Money 2025 study, as published in the Financial Times, shows Riga to be the most affordable destination for short trips in Europe, LETA learned at the External Communications Department of the Riga City Council.
It was the first time in a decade for Latvia’s capital city to top the list, offering travellers significantly lower costs than in other European cities.
The 2024 report on Christmas markets, for instance, put Riga in third place behind Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia, as well as the Lithuanian capital city Vilnius.
The most recent study analyses 12 common line items for tourists, including meals, public transport and accommodation in 38 cities across Europe.
A two-night stay in a three-start hotel in Riga with meals, drinks and transport costs will cost around GBP 253 (EUR 294), which is 15% less than last year. Vilnius is in second place on the list, while Warsaw in Poland came in third.
The study points out that Riga and other cities in the Baltic States and their neighbouring countries dominate the list because they offer excellent value for money. Riga offers tourists not just affordable prices, but a rich cultural heritage, beautiful architecture, and a vibrant urban environment that is attracting ever-increasing numbers of travellers.
