The Saeima on Wednesday passed in the final reading amendments to the Law on the Status of the Councilor of the Local Government Council authorizing the environmental protection and regional development minister to revoke a local councilor’s mandate for unjustified absence from three council meetings.
The minister will be authorized to revoke a councilor’s mandate if the councilor has been absent from more than half of council meetings over the period of three months.
The amended law also stipulates the local councils’ right to revoke such mandates.
On Wednesday, the Saeima also passed related amendments to the Local Governments Law.
The draft amendments were proposed by the Saeima Public Administration and Local Governments Committee after a number of councilors from the ruling coalition of Rezekne City started boycotting the city council’s meetings in response to the suspension of Rezekne Mayor Aleksandrs Bartasevics who is accused of leading the city into financial trouble.
