Re-election of von der Leyen shows pro-European majority in the EP – Dombrovskis

The re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as the President of the European Commission (EC) shows that the European Parliament (EP) still has a majority of pro-European, centrist forces, and it will be possible to work with this majority for the next five years, Valdis Dombrovskis (New Unity), the current Executive Director of the EC, who has been nominated by the government to continue to hold the post, told LETA.

The politician noted that the result of the vote was positive and convincing.

Dombrovskis stressed that one of the priorities for the next few years is to strengthen European security, including the development of the military industry, as well as further support for Ukraine.

“Undoubtedly, these issues are in Latvia’s interest,” the politician stressed, noting that the strengthening of the European economy, which is important for further economic growth and increasing prosperity, is also a focus of the EC President’s political priorities.

As reported, the EP on Thursday re-elected Ursula von der Leyen as President of the EC for a second term by an overwhelming majority. Von der Leyen needed at least 361 votes to be confirmed, but 401 out of 720 MEPs voted in her favor.
