Nationals from various countries denied entry into Latvia

Several foreign citizens were detained on Latvia’s border on Wednesday and denied entry into the country for security reasons, the National Border Guard informed the LETA News Agency.

Among them were four Moldovans, three Belarusians and one Ukrainian citizen. They were all returned to their country of origin.

Latvia’s State Security Service and Border Guard have intensified controls on foreigners seeking entry into Latvia at the country’s eastern border crossing points ever since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Earlier this year, during a discussion about how to strengthen Latvia’s eastern border that was organised by the country’s defence industries, National Border Guard commander Guntis Pujats disclosed that his agency had prevented several possible Russian militarists or special services agents from entering Latvia.
