Man sentenced to life in prison for murder of elderly woman in Latvia

The Kurzeme District Court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his 92-year-old acquaintance, the prosecutor’s office informed LETA.

According to the indictment, on September 22 last year, the accused, under the influence of psychotropic substances, broke into the apartment of the elderly woman in order to steal money belonging to her. The accused, taking advantage of the elderly woman’s helpless state, stabbed her 15 times.

After the crime, the accused stole a purse belonging to the elderly woman and the money it contained – EUR 770.

The prosecutor asked for life imprisonment and is therefore satisfied with the sentence handed down by the court and does not intend to ask the court to prepare a full verdict.

This is at least a second life sentence handed down this year for the brutal murder of an elderly woman. As reported, the Riga City Court sentenced a 74-year-old man to life imprisonment for the murder of his 85-year-old acquaintance. On April 3 last year, the accused, driven by anger while using alcohol, murdered the woman with at least 22 stab wounds to various parts of her body.
