The Lithuanian postal service, Lietuvos Pastas (LP) has announced plans to nearly double its network of parcel networks in the country to 700 or 800 of them by 2029. This is because the Lithuanian Transport Ministry has asked that the parcel locker network in Lithuanian town and villages be expanded.
Transport Minister Eugenijus Sabutis has already approved an update to Universal Postal Service (UPS) regulations which require that new parcel lockers be installed in villages and towns with at least 500 residents.
“We have received many requests from people and communities in more remote areas,” Sabutis said in a news release that was released last Thursday. “Under the previous system, people in regions, including those with limited mobility and senior citizens, were at a disadvantage.”
The updated rules will ensure that “people will no longer have to travel dozens of kilometres to a district centre to find the nearest parcel locker,” Sabutis added.
LP will start to upgrade the technologies of its parcel lockers this year, the aim being to enable the delivery of registered letters, official documents and other postal items at the nearest locker instead of a post office.
