Lithuanian education minister, vice-minister step down over problems with exams

Lithuanian Education, Science and Sport Minister Gintautas Jakstas and Deputy Minister Ramunas Skaudzius are stepping down from their positions following problems during 11th graders’ intermediary examinations.

“Today, I am publicly asking the prime minister to accept my resignation as education, science and sport minister,” Jakstas told reporters on Tuesday.

The minister also said that he accepted the vice-minister’s resignation on Monday.

“Yesterday, I accepted the resignation of Deputy Minister Ramunas Skaudzius, who has been responsible for the model of intermediary exams and their implementation from the very beginning,” Jakstas told reporters.

“I respect his decision and his position that the issue must be tackled with a new approach and energy and I thank him for his work,” he added.
