Lithuania on Friday is introducing 0 as its new national phone prefix and will keep the old prefix 8 in place for a year, but the authorities recommend using the +370 country code when storing contacts.
“The 8 prefix will stop existing on March 1 next year,” Rima Aukstuolyte, spokeswoman for the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), told BNS.
“People who will dial it will hear an audible signal indicating that the connection is not possible,” she said. “And from December next year, they will no longer hear even that.”
According to Indre Jurgelioniene, advisor to the CRA Council, service providers are obliged to ensure the functioning of both prefixes during the transitional period so that users can adapt.
If users have phone numbers saved with the prefix 8 in their contacts, they will have to change them. Those who already use Lithuania’s country code of +370 will not be affected at all.
