Lithuanian Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas, was in Washington DC this week, and he believes that his country could ramp up the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States via the LNG terminal at Klaipeda “to the maximum possible level.”
“We see great potential for even broader and more intensive co-operation,” Mr Vaiciunas declared in a news release after his meeting with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright. “LNG imports from the US via the Klaipeda LNG terminal could be increased to the maximum possible volume so as to satisfy the needs of the entire region.”
Vaiciunas added that another goal for the terminal is to help provide gas to Ukraine by making use of its capacity and the Lithuania-Poland Gas Interconnection system.
The Lithuanian minister and Wright also discussed ways of strengthening a partnership in the development of clean energy, including nuclear energy, new technologies, and the protection of critical energy infrastructure in the Baltic Sea region.
The two officials also discussed the possibility of using a small modular reactor in Lithuania, the press release said.
