Lawmakers don’t support relocation of Estonian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

The Riigikogu on Monday did not support a draft calling for the relocation of the Estonian embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and the cancellation of the decision to close the Estonian consulate general in New York.

The draft resolution, initiated by the group of the opposition Estonian Conservative People’s Party (EKRE), sought to propose to the government that the Estonian embassy be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a move to express support for Israel.

Fourteen members of the 101-seat chamber voted in favor of the resolution, there were no votes against and no abstentions. The draft resolution that required the support of at least 51 MPs to pass was thus dumped.

With the second draft resolution, EKRE wanted the parliament to propose to the government to reverse the decision of the Foreign Ministry to close the Estonian consulate general in New York. Thirteen MPs voted in favor of its adoption, there were no votes against and no abstentions. The motion that required the support of at least 51 MPs to pass was also dumped.
