Law-enforcement officials from Lithuania and several other countries have detained four Georgian citizens suspected of stealing valuable books from Vilnius University and libraries in other European countries, the Prosecutor General’s Office said on Thursday.

The operation involved about 100 police officers, including four from Lithuania.

Officials suspect that members of the organized crime group stole 17 books of great historical and cultural significance, valued at around 440,000 euros in total, from Vilnius University Library’s Rare Books Reading Room and the Professors’ Reading Room in May 2023.
