Four F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets and some 50 personnel from the Finnish Air Force are currently deployed to Iceland to support NATO’s Air Policing mission and strengthen airborne surveillance and interception capabilities, under Iceland’s Peacetime Preparedness Needs (ASIC IPPN).
The ASIC IPPN mission establishes air surveillance and interception coverage over Iceland in order to maintain the integrity of the NATO airspace. This marks Finland’s first participation in NATO’s Air Policing mission in Iceland.
The Finnish Jets will remain on Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) in Iceland until the end of February 2025. Finnish fighter controllers are also working closely with the Icelandic Coast Guard and personnel from “Loki,” the Control and Reporting Centre in Keflavik, to help safeguard NATO airspace in the Arctic region.
