The European Union (EU) prefers to reach a mutually acceptable solution with the United States on tariffs before the end of the 90-day partial tariff pause, EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis (New Unity) said during a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington, DC, on Friday.
Dombrovskis’ office informed LETA that during the bilateral meeting, the impact of US tariffs on the economy was discussed. Dombrovskis pointed out that, according to European Commission analysis, the tariffs would have a negative effect on the EU economy — but an even more detrimental impact on the US economy. He emphasized that tariffs of this magnitude would also harm global economic growth.
Dombrovskis reiterated that the EU seeks to reach a mutually acceptable agreement on tariffs before the end of the 90-day pause, warning that failure to do so would hurt both the EU and US economies.
The two sides also discussed the importance of maintaining responsible fiscal policies in both the US and Europe, given their significant influence on global economic growth. Dombrovskis emphasized that the EU will continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression until a just and lasting peace is achieved.
“A lasting peace is essential because Russian power brokers are already openly discussing the possibility of attacking other countries, including EU and NATO members. Accordingly, it is important for the US to raise awareness of the significance of the war in Ukraine in the broader context of European security,” Dombrovskis said.
