Estonian Academy of Arts sees major leap in list of world’s top universities

The Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) is among the world’s 150 most respected higher education institutions in the field of art and design based on the QS evaluation system.

Having already made it into the strong 200 in previous years, this time EKA stepped up a whole order of magnitude higher among the world’s most respected higher education institutions in the field of art and design, spokespeople for the university said in a press release.

Rector Mart Kalm congratulated the university’s community of staff and students.

“We consider the main task of the Estonian Academy of Arts to offer high-level architecture, design, art, and art culture higher education, with which we contribute to the shaping of Estonian cultural space and a better living environment. As Estonia’s only public art university, I am happy to say that EKA is recognized so highly at the world level,” he said.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an educational research company, released the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 on Wednesday, ranking the world’s universities in 51 academic fields. Among EKA’s closest partner schools the list also includes the Rhose Island School of Design in the United States, Aalto University in Finland, the Royal College of Art and the Glasgow School of Art in the United Kingdom, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia and Konstfack in Sweden.

Research conducted with QS Global Partners helps highlight institutions that work with international partners to add value to the global research bank. To compile this year’s rankings, the QS team analyzed the reputation and research performance of 4,989 institutions.

EKA’s strong result is due in part to the Academic Reputation Index, which is central to the QS World University Rankings and QS Subject Rankings. The index assesses the global performance of universities. The metric responds to the insights of international researchers to identify higher education institutions that demonstrate academic excellence. Their collective expertise sheds light on the quality of research, strategic partnerships, innovation and the wider educational and societal impact of these universities. The research also plays a major role in the citability of scientific works, the impact and quality of the research carried out at EKA is examined, based on a five-year publication and a six-year citation window.

In the Estonian Academy of Arts, which has been operating since 1914, it is possible to study more than thirty curricula in the faculties of architecture, design, art culture and liberal arts. In 2017, 2022 and 2023, EKA entered the list of the world’s top 200 art and design universities in the QS World University Ranking.
