Cargo turnover declined at Riga Port

The Riga Freeport handled 2.74 million tonnes of cargo during the first two months of 2025, which was a 13.2% drop as against the same period last year, according to information that has been released by the port.

Bulk cargo was most important in the structure of the port in January and February, and it declined by 25.2% on the year to 1.288 million tonnes.

Turnover of general cargo shrank by 1.2% to 1.258 million tonnes, while liquid cargoes amounted to 194,100 tonnes, which was an increase of 20.7%.

Reloading of container cargo decreased 4.8% on the year to 799,200 tonnes during January and February. This represented 29.2% of the ports total cargo turnover (as against 26.7% a year ago).

Reloading of grain and grain products fell 26.4% from the level a year ago to 508,700 tonnes, or 18.6% of all handled cargo.  Timber was up 12% to 441,800 tonnes.

The port in Riga handled 18.062 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, which was a drop of 3.9% against the previous year.

Riga remains Latvia’s largest port, however, in terms of cargo turnover.
