Almost third of Lithuanians in favor of allowing Russians to partake in Olympics

Almost a third of the Lithuanian population are in favor of the International Olympic Committee’s decision to allow individual Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Olympic Games, while more than half are against, according to a new survey by Baltijos Tyrimai for the country’s public broadcaster LRT on Thursday.

It showed that 30 percent of respondents approve of the IOC’s decision to allow Russians and Belarusians to take part in this year’s Paris Olympics with a neutral status, and 56 percent are against.

The IOC decided to bring the Russians and Belarusians back to the Olympic Games in early December and stressed that only individual neutral athletes from Russia and Belarus would be allowed to participate, but not team sports athletes. Both, the Lithuanian Olympic Committee and the Education, Science and Sports Ministry view this move negatively.

The survey of 1,017 adult Lithuanian residents was carried out on December 15-30.
