The United Nations E-government survey in 2024 has found that Estonia has the second best level of state-provided E-services among all UN member states. Only Denmark is ahead of Estonia, with Singapore following behind in third place.
The survey speaks to widely available digital services, a well-functioning communications infrastructure, as well as, specifically, Estonia’s digital identity ID system, which enables access to public services.
The survey also points out that government agencies in many countries are making extensive use of various information systems, but E-governance involves more than just technologies. Governments must rethink the entire process of creating digital services if they are to provide the relevant public services.
The UN survey furthermore addresses the fact that Estonia’s national digital strategy is closely linked with the European Union’s sustainable development goals and digital strategies. This promotes greater international co-operation and innovation in the provision of public services.
Estonia’s Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs, Liisa Pakosta, says that Estonia’s well-functioning digital solutions means that people and companies can access the necessary services more quickly and smoothly. Communications with the government are faster and cheaper.
“Our high ranking in the UN report was first and foremost earned by Estonians who trust our digital services and use them daily in their dealings with the state,” Pakosta says. “We thank everyone who has devoted their wisdom and energy toward the development of our digital state.”
