On Monday morning at around 6 a.m., due to storm damage, the power supply to around 30,000 customers was disrupted, Sadales Tikls power distribution network operator informed LETA.
The power supply disruptions were mainly recorded in the central districts of the country – Tukums, Jelgava and Dobele districts, followed by Ropazi, Marupe and Olaine districts.
“Distribution network operatives and additional contractors are working to restore electricity supply. In more complex damage situations, restoring the electricity supply may take longer, and it should be taken into account that access to the damage may be hampered by trees broken down by the storm, as well as areas flooded by heavy rains,” the company said.
Damage to the power grids is mainly caused by trees and branches falling onto overhead lines. Where possible, the electricity supply to customers is immediately restored via the associated power lines.
Overhead power lines are most at risk from bad weather. Such power lines account for about 35 percent of the entire distribution power network.
As reported, a storm has been crossing Latvia since Sunday evening, bringing extremely heavy, persistent rain and wind gusts of 20-24 meters per second, up to 27-30 meters per second in coastal areas. The Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology has issued an orange warning for rain and wind in the central districts of the country, and a red warning of the highest level in Riga and its surroundings.
