SDE leader says govt coalition to look for ways to alleviate housing shortage

Leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDE) Lauri Läänemets said that the ruling coalition is seeking solutions during negotiations to reduce the co-financing required for the renovation of apartment buildings in rural areas and to assist local municipalities in creating more rental apartments.

“As we know, there is a significant regional problem across Estonia with the availability of decent housing at a reasonable price and a general shortage of housing. Young people and young families are forced to move to big cities because there is no place to live. At the same time, rental prices in cities are rising steeply,” Läänemets said at a press conference on coalition negotiations on Friday.

The SDE leader said that the government coalition is trying to find solutions to further reduce the co-financing required for the renovation of apartment buildings in rural areas.

“We are improving and modernizing the housing measures of Kredex and the Rural Development Foundation (MES) to make it easier for people to get loans to buy homes. In certain areas, banks say that the property value is too low and loans cannot be granted,” he noted.

“We are examining and analyzing how to support local municipalities to create more rental apartments. Currently, apartments are being built for sale, but few are constructed as rental properties. We are trying to find solutions to help municipalities contribute to the increase in rental apartments,” Läänemets added.

With regard to Tallinn Hospital, Läänemets said the aim is not only to complete the hospital but to create something much larger, such as a medical campus that could also attract private investment.
