Latvia has not received any requests from Ukraine and our country currently has no concrete plans to stimulate the return of men of conscription age to Ukraine, Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) told members of the press after Tuesday’s government meeting.
The Prime Minister said that the government had not received any request from Ukraine to react specifically. “We have no plan to sort or search these people in any special way and send them back to Ukraine. (…) This is a matter of Ukraine’s internal policy at the moment,” said Silina.
In December, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov called on all citizens, regardless of their location, to join the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Illarion Pavlyuk, Head of the Press Service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, clarified that the Ministry of Defense has no plans to put pressure on Ukrainian citizens living abroad, but stressed that national defense is the constitutional duty of every citizen.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte on Monday expressed their belief that Lithuania should help Ukraine to bring back to their homeland men of draft age living abroad.
“Ukraine needs mobilization plans,” Nauseda said in a debate on Lithuanian public radio, stressing that “Ukraine must provide the means and tools to encourage young men to serve in their homeland. We must cooperate with Ukraine in every way”.
