The new Latvian Ambassador to Italy Elita Gavele is committed to developing economic cooperation between the two countries in smart specialization sectors.
As the ambassador told LETA, this will also serve to further Latvia’s visibility in Italy and support those entrepreneurs who want to enter the Italian market. Gavele noted that Italy is a market of 60 million people and is a member of the G7 forum of the world’s most industrialized countries. The Ambassador also wished to stress that Latvia is a geopolitically secure country and has a favorable environment for investment.
In the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Gavele intends to maintain a close dialogue with Italy in order to ensure that Ukraine receives further comprehensive support in line with its needs. In view of the fact that in 2025 Italy will organize a conference on Ukraine’s reconstruction, which will also discuss Ukraine’s integration into the European Union, the Ambassador will use this as a platform for Latvia to talk about Latvia’s contribution to supporting Ukraine.
The Ambassador underlined that Latvia was grateful for Italy’s contribution to strengthening the security of Latvia, the Baltic States and NATO. Italian soldiers are part of the international military contingent at the Adazi base. As a strategic partner of Latvia, it is also intended to strengthen security cooperation with Italy.
The Ambassador mentioned the promotion of tourism to Latvia as one of the challenges in relations with Italy. She noted that Italy is a well-known and popular destination for Latvian nationals.
“As Ambassador of Latvia, I would like Latvia to become an attractive tourist destination for Italian tourists through the different dimensions of our country – nature, culture, gastronomy, entertainment and sports events. And of course, maintaining the already extensive cultural links and developing new contacts will be an important part of my work,” said the Ambassador.
